ASARCO - East Helena, Montana, USA | Baghouse Replacement with 400'-0" Freestanding Stack...

In 1899 Asarco organized as American Smelting and Refining Company. Included in this original consolidation were mines and mining claims in Colorado and Mexico. Major plants in consolidation included: Globe by-products plant (Denver, Colorado), East Helena lead smelter (Montana), El Paso lead plant (Texas).

Our job was to upgrade the Plant located in East Helena Momtana to structural standards acceptable by current codes. This included seismic considerations for a structural arrangement that had been in operation since the late 1800’s. The photo shows the construction of a 400’-0” freestanding steel stack servicing the newly installed baghouse designed to meet current air clean acts. The 14'-0" diameter stack was supported by a 20’-0”diameter “Caisson” dilled 5’-0” into the bedrock found 35’-0” below the surface. These first 35’-0” were composed of fly-ash deposited by the last activity of the super-volcano at Yellow Stone National Park with a caldera diameter of 57 miles! Our deep foundation had to penetrate 5’-0” through the decomposed original bedrock due to the immense heat generated by the volcanic activity 66, 000 years ago. The design required seismic considerations for what then was zone 3B following its proximity to the Yellow Stone Park area and 90 MPH wind.

CONSTELLATION - Baltimore, Maryland, USA | Cooling Tower Replacement...

After years of service the wooden portion of the two cooling towers at Constellation Power in Baltimore needed replacement. My task was to review the reinforced concrete basin for current wind loading forces and compliance with the IBC code recently adopted by the City of Baltimore. The structural analysis was performed using RISA 3D. The wooden upper portion of the cooling tower being a manufactured item was designed by the specialty engineer who provided the geometry which was utilized to develop the computer model shown here. Our findings were favorable to our client who happily installed the new structure on the existing basins.

UNILEVER - Raeford, North Carolina, USA | Process Platform...

"Double Click to See Drawings"

The design of this elevated platform required that the tanks be completely supported by the framing and not rested on the concrete below. The lateral loads were quite large owing to the very large combined weight of vessels and product. Further challenging the design was the use of “Load Cells” to measure the content and maintain levels of flow responsive to processes requirements. Lateral deformations and relative deflections were the controlling factors in the frame design. Other maintenance requirements dictated the general arrangement of space, stairs, and working area access. The framing was married to existing adjacent framings to maintain unity of access.

VOLVO - Hagerstown, Maryland, USA | Plant Revamp...

"Double Click to See Some Drawings!"

Mack, now known as Volvo since its purchase by the Swedish automaker’s truck division, underwent a complete overhaul. Many areas required new processes to be engineered and their respective support utilities and architectural needs.

Our job was phased through many areas of activities. The Courtyard required space for employee’s activities of gathering and lunching while allowing for activities of reunions and seminars. A kitchen was installed with limited services. The courtyard also became the focal point directing employees to variety of activities all centered around socializing and eating. Some office space was provided for administration purposes and as an expansion to the already crowded existing offices. Other areas were designed to carry out manufacturing functions of a number of different activities.
