Metal Building Design Systems in Maryland - Cold Formed Structures...
The
use of Cold Formed Engineering is NOT a new engineering system. Historically
it goes back to the late 1800’s. How we use it today has the advantages
of many years of steel design evolution and code reviews paired with much
research that has lately enjoyed the advent of the computer age and electronic
gadgetry that cuts research time and brings accuracy to the development
of various systems. Some pitfalls still remain in the use of this material
as it integrates with other structural systems. The mere substitution
of wood for light-gauge studs is not the proper use of this versatile
structural element. The use of fasteners and welding needs review as it
relates to Cold Formed framing when thicknesses are less than 1/8”.
The integration of the various professional as a project is designed and
the documents are produced is also an important area to cover in a Seminar
such as this for many problems still exist that need our attention. A
listing of pertinent Codes was reviewed and a comparative summary of the
various manufacturers with their product not yet standardized in the market.
Sample projects and specific utilization of the many framing options were
discussed. Connection designs which rarely enjoy much review in textbooks
were discussed at length to facilitate the design approach. Finally, we
reviewed the trends of the Industry and discussed what a designer can
do at the present and what must be considered in the future as more engineers
use this material in future projects.
